The decay rate, or activity, of an isotope is dependent on the number of atoms present and Isotopes, Atomic Mass, Subatomic Particles | Middle School, High School Activity: Simulation Activity: Isotopes & Calculating Average Atomic Mass. In this simulation, students first learn how the average atomic mass is determined through a tutorial based on the isotope abundance for Carbon. This is a fun lab for high school students that are studying atoms. During this activity, students will rotate to lab stations and determine the atom that is being represented by the candies in a bag. This lab activity includes:*Teacher Directions*Student Lab Sheet*Lab Key*Sample ProblemSupplies nee Radiation | High School Project: The Tokaimura Nuclear Accident.
(10 h Lab). Prerequisites.
Record the MASSof all isotopes #1 together on a scale. 3. Countthe number of atoms of isotope #1 and record in the data table. Verify this number by having your lab partner count again. If you do not agree on the number, count them again together. 4. Calculatethe averagemass of one isotope #1using thefollowing formulaand record:

Many use this opportunity for senior science projects and present their efforts at regional science fairs. Improved isotope testing capabilities . ALS has introduced a second MC-ICP-MS system to our instrument park. The instrument, Neptune Plus, is the latest generation and allows us to offer isotope analyses at even lower concentrations and with better precision than before. By combining commercial testing with a strong focus on research, ALS Scandinavia is taking the latest in isotope testing to As a high school teacher or administrator, you have the opportunity to instill and foster a safety mindset in your students during some of their earliest exposures to science and laboratory work. Use Mega M&Ms, M&Ms minis, and regular M&M’s in this activity to examine the concept of isotopes and average atomic mass. The color of the M&M’s represent that they are the same element and have the same number of protons. The size represents, in a relative sense, the different numbers of neutrons. Use this enrichment activity about isotopes to develop students' understanding of physical science concepts.

High School student Kevin Zhou rocks the lab! This summer we are thrilled to be hosting high school student Kevin Zhou (2nd from right in the image) in the lab as part of the STARS program. Kevin’s been working with Dr. Jen Houghton to characterize grain-specific isotopic (d 34 S) values in sedimentary pyrites from methane seeps in the Santa Monica basin.
7. Chem We are an isotope geochemistry and geochronology laboratory located in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University. We are dedicated to furthering all fields of science through high quality isotopic analysis and research using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry. Since that achievement, the Lab has continued advancing the production of the valuable radioisotope—leveraging the Lab’s High Flux Isotope Reactor and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, ORNL’s largest hot cell facility—moving closer to the goal of 1.5 kg of Pu-238 annually by 2025. We offer analysis of more than 20 isotopic systems by two different high resolution ICP-MS techniques: high-resolution ICP-MS (ICP-SFMS) and multi-collector ICP-MS (MC-ICP-SFMS).
